The need to know

I arrived at the station the other day and although I knew that the tram comes approximately every ten minutes, I checked the time table in order to know the exact time of departure or some possible delay. Although I was not in hurry, I realized that I like to know the circumstances of virtually anything. I knew that I shall enter the tram even if it had a delay and yet I checked the time. I also think that many problems arise from not knowing and although knowing something may not change anything, the fact alone means a lot for us. It is like with truth. very often we do not know what really truth is but it is our nature to seek it. it may sound paradoxical but I agree that there is not a rational reason to seek something that we are not able to denote and define precisely, or at least find a general consensus about truth. truth is relative after all and very chagneable. or is it not? may truth be something universal, that we all know about intrinsically and only need to listen to our inner self to learn it? today we see politicians that tell lies (what is a lie?) and noone cares about it. if we want to know what lie is, we need to define truth as well. for the purpose of this article and topic of politics we can say that truth and lie are opposing forces excluding each other. for example in my view – and hopefully can be said generally – that a lie is when prime minister and president of our Czech republic say that we should guard our borders against migrants because they pose a fear for us. I dare say that winning votes due to these propositions is immensely dangerous because people agree that they give their votes easily to anyone who promises them easy solutions like-yes, we shall have a better society-. people accept that just saying this stupidity it is enough and do not think about all the issues behind it. another issue I would like to highlight is that there is no small lie. our current prime minister Babis said a lie that he can solve anything and almost a third of people gave him their vote. take also into consideration that he was then a person accused of fraud avoiding paying taxes. now he asked to be not only prime minister but also a minister of justice which I think is ludicruous. a person that should go to jail wants to be a minister of justice. here we see that, hopefully, many people who gave him their vote would not vote for him now they see this but there is not a possiblity of stepping back, a small lie brought much serious and grave problems about. nevertheless, I think that out society is in such a wealth that we need to be punished for our hipocrisy a bit in order to appreciate the wealth we have, we can now hope that once the prime minister Babis steps down or is imprisoned, the state of state is not be in such a dire state that it would not be reparable.

finding meaning in anything one does

finding meaning in anything one does
I drove today through the city with a velocity a bit higher than allowed and my mother who drove with me asked me to slow down. at first I did because it was not my intention to break spead limits, but then I stepped into opposition because I believe that speed limit is too low and that I can steer the vehicle even in higher speed than recommended or allowed. My mother told me that the importance and meaning of speed limit is not a subjective view about ones abilities as a driver, but an objective fact, that one is not able to break when one sees someone on the road and drives too fast. once she came up with this argument, I realized that she was true because suddenly I saw the reason behind all that. Until now, I naively thought that speed limit is here in order to keep the drivers that are not so good in save barriers. once I saw the meaning in why it is imposed on people, I realized that it is necessary to follow it. I reckon that seeing a meaning in anything one does is the thing most necessary for any conduct.I read an article about prisioners in concentration camps, that were told to dig trenches, irigations, canals and so on and due to the fact that they had a meaning why they were doing it, they survived. naturally, it was not a meaning globally-they were doing it against themselves, but in fact and in this particular occasion, they did something that had a result. Once they were told to just dig a hole and then cover it and this was done whole day long, they very often went mad or commited suicide because there was no result. This may sound absurd or paradoxical because by digging trenches, they do more harm to themselves because they help they oppresors than by digging only a hole. nevertheless, people need to see a result and meaning rather than thinking about to what purpuse it leads consequentially. It is similar as with the people I work with- people with mental handicap. THey do not understand why they should keep in hygiene themselves or keep the surrounding clean. they do not understand that in the dirt there are bacteria and that they may happen to become ill. once they do not understand it, it is virtually impossible to make them to do that because they oppose it. this is natural, they do not want to do anything they do not believe or do not understand. in this case, we have to find another motivator different than healthy people have- satisfacton from living in a clean surrounding. they are then motivated by sweets for example or telly or similar indulgences. it took me some time to understand that one needs to see a meaning even in these minor things but now I see that there is nothing like minor or major thing or action because everyone perceives it subjectively. nowadays I try to see them as individuals and do not want to force them to my views about what should be done but rather see what they want and give them what they want as exchange for doing what I am here for- for example keeping their surrounding clean and healthy.

what do people most regret when they are on the deathbed?

what do people most regret when they are on the deathbed?
I read about a book that deals with issues that people most regret when they are dying and on the first place was that they did not do what they wanted, did not spend time with people they liked, did not visit places they wanted and so on. This is not surprising for me because people around me talk very often about not having time or money to do this or that and rather live in a dream than living the dream. Objectively, it is naturally true that for some things we shall never have enough money, but on the other, is not money or time just a pretense? We have only time for what we want to have time. When one has children and says that it is impossible to save money or time for going on vacation, then on one hand he is right but on the other, this pretext may be used for ever. and maybe some people really rather live in a dream, that someday they shall have money, rather than doing something for waking up from the dream and living the life. I do not judge, but I think that majority of people really like staying in their zone of comfort without doing anything for fulfiling their dream. I also think that what people regret very often, which may not be mentioned in the most regretable issues people say is honesty. Naturally, actions and deeds, choices and so on are things that people regret because they know that they could have made better choices then they have, but on the other hand, the consequences of choices is never forseenable and when looking backward, we cannot say whether our life would be better or not having done this or that differently. whereas when talking about honesty to oneself and to others, it is quite obvious, that when not being frank and straight to the people around one lives in a lie. this is not a dream one does not want to realize, this is nightmare after all, fully voluntary nightmare, living in a prison of lie, this is even worse than psychological menagerie that people sometimes believe. living in a menagerie of lies that are told to us by powers that be is similar to living ones dream, it is a lie, but a lie that we are taught to believe and like and hope that in the future it may come to fruition. living in dishonesty is living in a permanent lie that never changes unless the one changes ones view and starts to be honest, it is very different from the menagerie or illuson of the dream that may once be real. regreting not being truthful is in my view the thing that people regret most in life because it is basically a root of all other regrets, it underlies all other things that one tries to believe and knows that are not true. rather than living a dream it is much better, I think, to be truthful to oneself and realize that such a dream may really be too expensive and that one focues rather on some other dream, something that is pursuable easily. after all, can one really say that dreaming is something bad? it may sound so after reading all this, but I do not think so. what I think though is that when one volunarily lives in dishonesty then everything else must be inevitably unlucky for the one because being truthful is the milestone of all other actions and deeds, that is why I claim that the choice to or in this case not live live in truth and honesty is something that people regret even more than stupid actions or deeds from the past.

Die for your country, nation, EU

Die for your country, nation, EU
I read a commentary about possible creation of an EU army that would be created by armies of all other member states of the european union. I asked myself what would someone go and kill for the EU or would risk ones life for such an abstract notion as the EU? I personally do not believe in a nation, I do not feel myself as Czech, although I know and virtually accept being a part of Czech society and culture, whatever that means. For me it means that I was born here but do not have any strings attached based on my culturual or historical heritage. Having said that, I do not understand why would someone sacrifice ones life for a social construct or such an ephemeral concept as nation and consequently EU. Nevertheless, I am able to understand that someone may-and probably the majority of people do- believe in a nation and would fight for it. Remember patriotism of some countries, going out and dying for the flag, for the land, the community. While these people may accept fighting for their land or nation, how would one motivate them to fight and die for such an artifical project as the european union? imagine that one nationalistic country may see other states as inferior-conditioned culturally or historically, they may have been opressed-so here we may see a resentment against the country, or may have been opressors and here we see the inclination to approach patronizingly against the country. In my view, creation of a conjoint army would need people to understand that nation, race, culture or heritage is all a randomly given concepts that are not in reality valuable for us in any way. These things are given and not earned. one should not feel a better person based on something that was given to him. If we are to create an army that would be able to cooperate, or if we are to improve the communication between cultures and nations, we need to accept that what matters is the choice to see other as equals, as humans and not as Czechs, Jews, Germans, black and so on. If we live in the past theories of races or nations we shall never step succesfully into the future.

The dilemma of too much or too little parenting

I have been thinking about why parents are so adamant in their visions for their childrens future. On one hand, I understand that they want to make them happy and feel obliged to do so because they are old and experienced and the children do not know what happiness is , not even for them. on the other, when parents choose some kind of future for their children, then they inevitably take the responsibility as well. If I force my child into finding a partner that I find suitable, then I can be to blame if their relationships falls apart. It is understandable that parents want to do the best for the children, and it is also their duty, they should not, nevertheless, take the responsibility from them because it is their life, not parentses. the boundry to do this is unfortunatelly blurred, there is a fine line between taking too much responsibility and taking too little. I would even say that it is inevitable that children blame their parents-either for forcing them too much or too little into things that should have been done. I myself remember being forced into attending music school and hated it. after all, now in my adulthood I am glad I know how to play a few christmas tunes on the flute. having children is a tough job and a part of the job of the parent-i think the hardest- is to reconcile with the inevitable fact that some children just do not succeed, the strivings of parents notwithstanding.

child-like Love one should follow

What does it mean to be in love? Is it really just chemistry and what comes after some months or in some cases years must inevitably be pragmatic approach towards the relationship without love? There are so many books, maybe the most renown is Men are from mars, women from Venus and the book is virtually a pragmatic ˋhow toˋdo it in any relatonship. for some people the logic may work. my parents are defintely from among them. they needed to learn the language of love of the other in order to create a harmonic relationship. love or infatuation does not require much thinking. the more one analyzes the more is one misled. I like the simile to the love that Abraham had for God. He was willing to sacrifice his own son if God wanted it. We would not dare to think that God would want such a sacrifice but now we again are analyzing, using racio instead of childlike trust towards Him. The love that Abraham had could have been detrimental to his son, but Abraham did not question Gods will and followed Him. maybe that is also the approach the we should have. Stop thinking logically and trust Him in all that may come. or that may not come. let us forget our illusions about love or happiness, God is incredible and incredibly surprisng. all our plans are just fragments in what He wants for us. The true love that we may encounter is the only thing we need. who loves, needs nothing else.

Ideology and free will. Illusion of society

Ideology and free will. Illusion of society
I tried to read a piece of Zygmunt Bauman book on postmodernity and from what I understood I reckon that Bauman talks about renouncement of subjective perception in modernity. Today the world and society wants only concepts and designs but nothing further, not sophisticated and erudite thinking about the reality. we focus-are told to focus on fleeing likes on facebook. Modernity is not living but only a semblance of living, a kind of hyperreality where we are not capable of distinguishing what is real and what is hyperreal, what is semblance of reality. In this state of living we are consciously contributing to the fact that we live in a vision that is becoming more and more real to us, we exchange it for the real world with all its consequences and what is most important-responsibilities. We are no more sentient being but only shadows of what used to be real and solid, we are consciously becoming simulacrum of genuines which is no more genuine but the more we think it is, the more we paradoxically delve into unreal world. unfortunately, when the illusion is more alluring than reality, the illusion becomes our reality. what we believe is true becomes true. We consciously and willingly exchange freedom for chains, we are becoming only trained monkeys in menagerie of the powers that be. is ones perception important for society? society values only what helps it to keep those few in power- that is uniformity, panopticism, menagerie, sterility, docility. We are old to focus on something far away, something that may come, that is why we like dreaming, reading about traveling somewhere because we secretely dream that we shall once be those who are being liked on facebook but deeply inside we know that likes is not why we would do it. society likes us only when we conform to it, otherwise it devours us. it is like the leviathan that shall not be appeased with anything else than total obedience and loss of uniqueness. it is the conditional love- barter, exchange of goods. society protects us only when we are contributive to it and under surveilence, as Michael Foucoult says-in panopticism. I add further than panopticism is not enough for society because it needs us to do more than just be uniform and under scrutiny, it needs us to produce what it wants us to produce and that is why it teaches us to assimilate, to be in a menagerie and produce and perform feats that it teaches us. it keeps us save only as long as we are kept in the cage and perform what we are told to do. once we rebel from it, it ostracizes us and sees us as renegades. what is most despicable is that we as people conform to our fear so much as to go to the cage of menageric instituion voluntariy. as Gramsci and Althuser warn we are voluntarily entering schools and other ideaological state aparatueses that changer our brains in order to be productive but no creative- that is the most vital point of ideological institutions. the only counter weapon to this change of mind that ideology wants us to make is the change of paradigm that accepts the society and sees is as a benefactor. once we understand that society uses us and needs us only as long as we are productive, then we have no more a reason to stay in either mental or physical menagerie it imposes upon us. the capability to avoid conformity is the hardest decision and the more we are in the mental chain of assimilation the harder it is to go away from it. nevertheless, it is always possible to avoid it because if the society showed that it keeps us in chains, all the system would fail, because the semblance of freedom is what todays so called democracy needs us to believe in. as long as it keeps the semblance of peace, security and liberty, as long as it gives us bread and circuses we can be sure that the mass of mankind willingly sacrifices its freedom in order to gain the illusionary benefits of the menagerie we are in. today we see a great develoment of critical thinking. in the first place, we should be critical towards ourselves and not the society, because society does not exist- only people exist. society is only a kind of concept, utopie that makes us believe that some time in the future all is going to be better. as Trump says-make America great again, as Czech prime minister says- yes, it shall be better. We exchange the reality for some kind of illusion in the future. instead of relisihing the reality of the present moment to the fullest, we make selfies and fotos to prove to the society that we live to the fullest but there is always the inevitable twinge, even moral pang that that living for the society is not what we want. anything that is hegemonical to us is something that robs us of our identity. although the society wants us to believe that it is anti-hegemony, it also imposes very rigidly the mental structure that we are free and yet even this statement when being forced is un-freedom. I do not have any expedient, any antidote, I do not suggest revolution or cultural revolution as Marxist say because revolutions, as it is proved by many such historical events, eat their fathers- and sons ultimately. the change of paradigm is what I suggest. stop thinking that it shall be better or great again, it shall not. let us forget that utopia is going to come and keep striving for better tomorrows these truths notwistanding. any enlightened truth or grand narrative is idea of yesterday. accepting the world as it is, with all its deficiencies and yet finding the reason to stay here and try to improve it is the way of today and tomorrow. the outcome is irrelevant, the effort to step further the result notwithstanding is what is real and at stake now.
